Job Description for Pastor

Job Title: Pastor

Reports to: Presbytery of Greater Atlanta COM and Crossroads Session

Supervises: Administrative Assistant, Choir Director, Youth Director

Position Summary

The Pastor, as the Minister of Word and Sacrament is the spiritual leader of the Church and is responsible with the Session to steward and implement the mission and vision of Crossroads Church. The Pastor is the moderator of the Session and abides by the Book of Order statements governing this position. 

Minister of Word and Sacraments   

  • Plans the order of worship with the Worship Leader 
  • Leads the worship service: i.e. prayer, offering, welcome visitors
  • Prepares and preaches sermons which proclaim the gospel 
  • Participates in Sacraments

Pastoral Care   

  • Prays for the people, mission and ministry of Crossroads
  • Provides counseling as requested or required, with an emphasis on the congregation and regular attendees
  • Visits and ministers to sick and shut-in
  • Conducts premarital counseling, weddings and funerals

Moderator of Session   

  • Serves with the Elders in the administration of the Church
  • Equips and assists Elders to do their work of pastoral care, ministry oversight, prayer and the conduct of business, to maintain relationships with and provide for the functions of our church within presbytery and larger governing bodies of the PC (USA)
  • Enables the congregation through the Session and Deacons to identify current issues and develop ways of addressing the issues
  •  Gives a verbal report at each monthly Session meeting
  • Supports the work of the Deacons in their ministry of care and for oversight of the facility

Leadership    

  • Continues to work with the Session on strategic planning 
  • Presents ideas and assists ministry leaders with the implementation of plans
  • Identifies the necessary components for leadership structure within Crossroads to meet the challenges coming from the strategic planning
  • Develops new leaders

Congregational Life 

  • Encourages spiritual development of congregation by example and teaching, particularly corporate prayer
  • Encourages small group program; visit groups yearly 
  • Promotes cross-cultural fellowship among members
  • Presents ideas and assists ministry leaders with the implementation of plans to promote spiritual growth, outreach activities and fellowship opportunities 

Outreach/Evangelism 

  • Provides leadership in community evangelism
  • Assures that newcomers to the church receive welcome letters and pastoral visits as requested

Christian Education  

  • Promotes and is knowledgeable about the CE program
  • Participates in the Christian Education program: may facilitate a class or may participate in classes across the age spectrum to gain insight and to offer encouragement

Administration    

  • Serves as Head of Church Staff including the supervision of Youth Director, Choir Director, Administrative Assistant
  • Performs all administrative duties as expected 
  • Abides by Crossroads Personnel policies

Presbytery    

  • Attends meetings and participates in activities of the Presbytery

Schedule

  • Preach 4 times/month with some exceptions: Elder preachers, Youth Sundays and vacation, continuing education and other ministry commitments:  8-10 days beyond 4 weeks vacation
  • 3-4 days in the office/week; Day off is Friday.
  • Schedules supervision of Administrative Assistant, Youth Director, Choir Director
  • Interacts with the Principal and staff of HIS Academy
  • Visits chronically ill or shut-ins
  • Accessible to the officers and congregation via e-mail and phone
  • Annual performance review with Session
